I expect you are aware of the push to introduce electric cars in the UK

with charging points popping up all over the place. Electric vehicles will undoubtedly lead to reductions in carbon emissions and lower running costs so are rightly seen as the future of travel.

Have you thought about electric motorbikes though?

Here’s a brief rundown on the best models currently available in this country:

• Zero SR/F. At launch Zero claimed their new model featured industry leading power, control and connection. Although uptake has been slower than expected, they do claim to sell more electric bikes per year than any of their competitors.

• Vespa Elettrica. As you might imagine from Vespa, the Elettrica is a scooter, bringing the Italian legend into the 21st century. It has a very respectable guaranteed range of 62 miles.

• Harley-Davidson Livewire. Orders are being taken for this beauty but it is not expected to be delivered until the autumn. Features include Showa shocks, TFT dash with Bluetooth connectivity and an option to fast charge the battery through the tank.

• Energica Ego. This bike took the first ever Motorcycle News Electric Bike of the Year award in 2017. The Ego is also the basis for racers that will be competing in the new MotoE series.

• Super Soco TC-Max. Having a top speed of 60 mph, this bike aims to rival the performance of a petrol one-stroke 125, whilst remaining more economical. It’s battery fully charges in four and a half hours and it has a maximum range of 80 miles.

• Super Soco CUx with Ducati. Super Soco will also be selling a Ducati branded electric version of their existing CUx scooter. Ducati are renowned as an industry leader and for producing state of the art bikes so it will be interesting to see how this model performs.

• Zero DSR. Zero’s DSR model certainly looks like it is the future of electric bikes! It is receiving a host of upgrades in 2019 including a new ZF14.4 battery.
