Motorcycle Practical Test – Module 1

The motorcycle practical test is divided into two modules.  You must pass Module 1 before you can attempt Module 2.

Module 1 comprises a series of off-road manoeuvers and takes place at our Test Centre.  You need to wear suitable clothing and have with you your CBT (DL196), your Theory and Hazard Perception Test pass certificate (less than 2 years old) and a valid licence.

This module usually takes 20 minutes to complete.

There will be a briefing before you begin a series of manoeuvers between and around coloured cones.  These will comprise:

  • Manual handling including taking the bike off its stand and reversing it from one cone parking area to another
  • Slow control steering including slalom and figure of eight
  • Slow ride which will be observed as you ride to the next manoeuver
  • Executing a U turn
  • Circuit bend at a speed of between 30 km/h and 50 km/h (approx. 20 mph to 30 mph) followed by a controlled stop in an area marked by blue cones
  • Cornering and an emergency stop at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (approx. 30 mph)
  • Cornering, avoidance exercise and emergency stop at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (approx. 30 mph)

If you do not reach the minimum required speed in either or both of the last two exercises you will be allowed a second chance to complete them.

If the examiner is satisfied that you have reached the required standard then he will issue you with a pass certificate.  Should you fail this module you must wait three working days before being eligible to take it again.
